Incorporating Text into Your Images - AMPt Darkroom
Editing Walkthrough

AMPt is excited to share our first Community written tutorial for the Darkroom Mobile Photography Tutorial series. This week’s Community tutorial was written by mobile photographer Brent Mosley @sleekmaus.

From Brent: “Lately I have seen more and more images incorporating text into the photograph. I have been asked on several occasions what my editing process was to achieve this result. That being the case I have put together a tutorial to show how I was able to do just that.”

While a picture alone can say a thousand words you can often enhance this message through the clever placement of text in your image. Read the FULL TUTORIAL where Brent walks us through a full edit and shows us one way to add and blend text into an image.

Utilizing Color Filters for Black and White Image Conversion

When viewed in color, a photo may have a wide array of color hues but once it is converted to black and white those hues may be too similar, thus producing a photo without many tonal values. However, by employing color filters to your photographs you can improve a photo’s tonal depth before you even start processing the contrast and brightness.

Read the FULL TUTORIAL where Anna runs through 5 black and white color filter, illustrates their impact on black and white image conversion and gives some tips on when to use one color filter over another.

AMPt Darkroom - 5 Creative Blend Mode Tricks for Mobile Photographers

Today’s tutorial takes more of a shotgun approach than my past Darkroom tutorials. Instead of getting into detail about how blend modes work I wanted to cut to the chase and share 5 of my favorite blend mode tricks. These aren’t just some of my favorites though…these are coming right out of my secret stash of tricks. You know which ones I’m talking about. The little tricks that you accidentally leave out of your editing process because, while sometimes subtle, they’re what totally make the edit? Those tricks…

AMPt Darkroom - Start Expanding Your Editing Options On Android with “Negative Editing”

In today’s tutorial we’ll be focusing on a technique called “Negative Editing”. Negative editing is unique in that it effectively expands the filters and effects available to you during the editing process. This is especially handy for Android users who are limited to a remarkably small catalog of photography related apps. While much of this lesson will focus on the “Negative Editing” technique, the bigger message here is to “think outside the box” as we encourage you to change how you look at (and use) your existing apps.

Read the FULL TUTORIAL where Jacob shows you how to double the filters and effects available in your editing arsenal without adding a single app. You may never look at editing the same again after reading today’s lesson.

AMPt Darkroom - Understanding the Basics of Layers & Masking

Layers and masking are two of the most useful and powerful tools available when editing images. A staple of professional photographers and graphic artists, layers and masks allow for non-destructive editing adjustments and blending that would otherwise be impossible with a flat one layer image. While the concept of masking (in particular) is actually fairly simple, the name often confuses artists and discourages them from using masks and layers all together.

Get ready to jump that hurdle as we get you up to speed on the basics of layers, masks and how they work.

Read the FULL TUTORIAL where Adam runs through layer and masking, how they work and provides some simple examples that will clarify the basics.

AMPt Darkroom - Using Points of View to Create More Interesting Images

Your point of view can either work for or against you while shooting. While there are, of course, many things to take into account when making a photo (placement, lighting, background, etc.) there’s no doubt that point of view can play a huge part in making an image stand out from the rest.

Read the FULL LESSON where Anna shows us some of the ways you can create more interesting images just by changing your point of view.

AMPt Darkroom - Harnessing the Power of “Selective App Stacking”

“App Stacking” is a common term used to describe the processing of an image through multiple apps to achieve a final edit. In fact, most mobile photographers use this technique every day and for many it has changed the way they approach their editing workflow. But are you familiar with “Selective App Stacking”? You should be…it might just change how you edit all over again.

In this Darkroom lesson we discuss the concept behind “Selective App Stacking” and Adam Conner shows how it can be used to improve the quality of your images while bringing new levels of control to your editing process.

Don’t miss the FULL TUTORIAL for a full breakdown of this technique.
