AMPT Jedi photo by Paul Brown @Phoneograph

Description:

‘Through The Arches’ ~ composite heavily processed painterly effect image of my daughter walking away from me through the Stonebow Arch in my home town of Lincoln. The image was shot specifically for AMPt which is unusual in that I had to go hunting for the image whereas I prefer to capture what comes to me. In that sense I see my capture style as more ‘fisherman’ than ‘hunter’.

Process:

I shot the image with a specific style in mind but as always I allow the image a degree of freedom to take it’s own path through the editing process. The edit process was therefore partly planned and partly adapted. Apps and comments:

1. Capture and create the foundation image:

~ 6x6 - almost all my iPhoneography is square format and I find 6x6 a really excellent app. I used motion in the capture which is where all the image distortion was generated. Moving with a swift down up 180 degree motion clicking at approximately 90 degrees. I do this quite a lot at the moment.

~ Snapseed - rotate to straighten the image.

~ FrontView - straighten verticals and alter perspectives.

~ Filterstorm - crop retaining the 1:1 aspect ratio, clone to touch up where necessary and resize to 2,000 x 2,000 (I always try to get finished resolution set at an early stage so that other edits / layers are applied at the already established final resolution).

2. Artistic editing process:

~ Iris 80’s Filter set to minimum.

~ Camera+ used to crop the image to the figure and save a copy of just the figure.

~ Filterstorm used to clone out the figure completely from the original image.

~ Superimpose used to re-add the figure back into the image but shifted right - purely for aethetic reasons.

~ Rays used to enhance the light coming towards me through the arch.

~ Snapseed - Drama filter at 50% with saturation 100% and Vintage filter with standard pre-sets but texture boosted to 100%.

~ Filterstorm used to clone in a shadow for the figure some of which had disappeared due to previous processing.

~ Superimpose - Balloon added to the image from a different image.

~ BlurFX - centre of ballon blurred to blend in with the background image more cleanly.

~ ScratchCam used to stamp scratch and texture layers at individual opacity settings and finally as the image was already in ScratchCam I used it to reduce saturation by adding a B&W colours layer set at 50% opacity (approx).

Paul (known as Skip to friends) is an exhibited and prize winning iPhoneographer from Lincoln, England.

My work features prominently at Photogenix Lincoln a collaboration with my sister Carly, a freelance private, commercial, location and studio photographer.

For me, when I first held my iPhone in February 2011 the fire was lit once again for photography and it was only because of my iPhone that I went on to dig out my old SLR and ultimately invest in a DSLR. However, my main interest lies in iPhoneography and having established Photogenix for Carly I started questioning what I really wanted for myself. Establishing phoneographer.orgseemed a logical and very natural step to take.

Description: I am a big fan of architecture, and the Brew City (Milwaukee, WI) holds it down with their Art Museum located on the shores of Lake Michigan. Designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, this design brings life to a city that was in dire need of an identity. This building is straight out of a Lunar Landscape, thus the inspiration for my edit.

Process:
1. I used juxtaposer to crop out the background behind the Art Museum.

2. I created a background on a black image using several filters in Spacepaint, then laid that image behind the Art Museum.

3. I juxtaposed my face into a crescent moon from Lensflare, then placed that stamp into the image.

4. I brought the entire image into Snapseed and adjusted the saturation and contrast, as well as added a center focus to the Art Museum.

5. I then brought that edit back into Spacepaint and added some streaks to the cables on the building, as well as the top spire. I also created a solar flare around my image in the crescent moon, and some smoke and sparkle to the water fountain in the foreground.

6. Brought it back into Snapseed for some final color corrections and added a border… THE END :) I’m pretty much hooked on spacepaint at the present moment, and continue to explore all that it has to offer (see Justin’s Bio in first comment)

Description:
My favorite thing to shoot is Chicago’s architecture. It’s unbelievably beautiful and classic. There are so many unique places to explore in and around the city, it’s never-ending. Chicago has so much to offer, I’m so lucky to be here. This shot is from one of my favorite views in the city. It’s at Michigan Ave and Wacker Dr, and either way you look is an incredible view. This is looking into the city, up the Chicago River. Turn around, and you’ll be looking out at the great Lake Michigan.

Process:
I usually start with Snapseed for most of my edits, it’s just a great start to straighten and adjust your photos. So that’s what I did: straightened, selectively adjusted the brightness near the water, and used the grunge effect, without texture, on style +1320. Then I moved to VSCO where I made a few adjustments using preset 4 and increasing the fade to 2. That’s it, really, I like to keep my edits simple.

Bio:
I’m a 20 year old student from Chicago. After taking some time off school, I’ve decided to go back as a pre-med student. I started using Instagram the way, I think, almost everybody started. Back when it was all tattoos, cats and skaters and we didn’t really know what to share. I guess I really evolved when those special mobile photographers started to stand out with their shots, edits, and creativity. I was inspired, and all I needed was my iPhone. It continues to be that way.

Title: Among the Weeds

Process:
I snapped this shot with the native iPhone 4s camera while hiking a monster hill near my house at sunset with my 2-yr-old shaggy-haired son, Coen. I then pulled it into Snapseed, applied vintage filter style 4, killed the texture, increased the saturation & dialed down the center size a bit. Then I amped the structure inside the details tab. And polished the whole thing off by decreasing the contrast slightly & increasing the white balance significantly in the tune image settings. Boom! Secrets revealed

Bio:
I became hopelessly addicted to Instagram in March of this year. I love capturing & chronicling my 3 tumultuous toddlers brushing up against everyday adventure. Essentially, I set out to cobble together a mobile family photo album that doesn’t suck. And I’m still amazed & honored that so many have enjoyed engaging in our visual story via this marvelous mulit-user app.

Title: illuminate

Description: I shot this in front of the back door of my studio at the end of a long day working inside. I take a lot of photos in spacious fields & wanted to challenge myself to capture a similar sense of freedom within a more confined setting

Process: iPhone 4 on tripod | Camera+ app self-timer | Snapseed app: selective adjust to brighten foreground, straighten +1.17, crop square, tilt-shift blur +80, transition +20, brighten +85, saturate +20, contrast +20 | VSCO filter 04

Bio: I’m a fine art oil painter from the mid-Atlantic US, married to the talented @nicholasjared. I consider mobile photography to be a digital extension of my sketchbook as an instant creative outlet. I’m continually amazed by the talent & kindness I find in the IG community.

Description:
The Forbidden Road.
I took this in one of the beautiful parks here on the Vancouver Island. I couldn’t resist with all the tall narrow trees and the shadows they cast all over the road

Process:
First I opened it up in LensLight and added a fake sun (yes its fake… most of the sunshine in my photos are fake). Then I used Snapseed and changed the white balance to add more warmth. Then I added more saturation as the photo was rather dull. After that I processed it in CrossProcess using the basic filter. After that I cropped it using the Photo editor

Bio:
My name is Rebecca and I live in Victoria, BC with my fiancé Brandon (@r3mus) and our 2 crazy but awesome kids as well as our 4 cats. I’ve always loved photography and have been fortunate to have a professional photographer as a father. I own an app development business and a photography business with Brandon and we are quite busy. I enjoy spending every minute I can taking photos and I view the world as an artistic canvas. Being an active person, I am always out going for walks and taking advantage of the scenery

Description:
My family makes a ton of appearances on my feed… There’s nothing better than weekend adventures and snaps of moments to reflect back to. These are the moments I enjoy the most, which made Instagram such an amazing tool for me. In this instance, the kids ran off and I got a chance to snap my lovely wife and pup. This is a hill at our favorite park that we named Maxwell’s Mountain… A name of a book my son loves which also happens to be his name. I actually have a #maxwellsmountain because we go there so much

Process:
The photo was taken with Cross Process with the blue and red filters turned on… I love the contrast that it gives to start the editing process. I then brought the photo into Snapseed and under Tune I decreased the brightness 25% and pumped up the ambiance 30%… This starts to give it the moody lighting that I love. I then sharpened it 30% and added a 10% of structure to bring out the details… Image cropped to 1x1 and then saved and opened in Photoforge2… I love to adjust tones and tweak the light in this app… I went into the Curves and under cymk I added a touch of yellow to bring out the warm tones and brought the highlights down a tad… Saved and on to the final step… In Picfx I added a combination of Classic and Vintage tones… Just a bit of Fern and Valentine to enhance the tones… And last but not least a slight vignette for added drama. Finished, saved and on to Instagram

My most important job is being a father and husband but I’m also a creative director at an advertising agency. Most of my life my hobbies circled around designing and drawing so it came natural when I had to start paying bills. Mobile photography honestly came out of ditching an extra device. The iPhone gave me a tool to not only communicate and work but to also capture moments. Carrying an extra camera was just not needed to snap everyday life. Also, the availability of apps to customize/tweak/composite all on one device just made it that much easier. I’m currently located in St. Louis, MO in search for what’s next. Thanks for reading.

I’m fortunate to live in a very photogenic city. Hong Kong provides near constant inspiration, often in my daily routine. I snapped this image on my walk home from work on Java Road in North Point

Process:
I’m a creature of habit. My go-to editing apps are Snapseed, Filterstorm, Picfx and VSCOcam. I often interchange and/or combine depending on my mood mostly

This image is a pretty straightforward edit. I used the native iPhone4s camera without the HDR. First stop was VSCOcam because I’m currently obsessed with it. It does such a fantastic job of processing color. Anyway, I square cropped it, then applied Fade and Temperature, both at setting one. Then saved. Next stop was Snapseed, where I adjusting the lighting and contrast slightly, and added a touch of Drama at 27%. Save. Last stop was Picfx, where I applied the Warm and Enhance filters, but only a smidgen

Bio:
I’m an American news editor living in Hong Kong for a year and a half. I co-founded a group of HK-based Instagram enthusiasts called HK Instayay. We host monthly photowalks and Instameets. I curated my first exhibition of Hong Kong iPhone photography in April and hope to do another soon.

Description:
In my work, I’m inspired by the combination of simplicity, special places, and new editing techniques. I also have a strong preference for open and desolate areas. That’s why I picked this photo. I Like the light in this one. I alway try to intensify the area where the light comes from, let that appeal. Kind of playing with light. :-) I always try to stay close to the original photo, not to over-edit it.

Process:
First thing I always do is open the app snap-seed and crop to square. Most of the time, thats the only app I use for editing on my device. Sometimes with the help oœf filter storm and cross process though.
In this one, I first used selective adjust to point the light part and added brightness. Another selective adjust point to contrast the sky/bring down the saturation and another point to bring down the brightness on the ground. Step two was the vintage filter, style 1. Took down the texture (as I always do by the way), brought down the style strength and strongened the centre size a little. Step three was Tuning the image, and make it more dramatic with the ambiance slider. Also brought down brightness and contrast a bit. Added another selective adjust to make the clouds look a bit more dramatic. Added another vintage filter, style 1, that finished the job for me

Bio:
My name is Claire Droppert. I was born in Hook of Holland, a town in the western Netherlands on the coast. I now live in Rotterdam. By profession, I work as a graphic designer and freelance photographer.

I started mobile photography early 2009, using my first iPhone. I couldn’t carry my SLR with me all the time, so now I was able to capture these moments with my iPhone. At first just experimenting, trying to capture special moments and playing with apps. After a while, I met instagram, and started to get more and more exited in mobile photography by seeing photos of all the talented IGers.

About the Artist:
Twenty-two year old graphic designer and rapper living in Chicago. I started mobile photography about a year ago thru Instagram. @trashhand introduced me to the huge creative community that consisted of more than just pictures of people’s food or cat… There was an artistic opening that I couldn’t resist given a try. I’ve been doing computer designs from the moment I could use a computer. Besides designing, I rap and represent the TreatedCrew from Chicago, a great collective of artists.
