How to Create Beautiful Long Exposure Shots: AVGCAMPRO Walkthrough

So you would like to take your photography to the next level?  Today’s darkroom tutorial will cover iPhone long exposures. A long exposure is used to sharply capture the stationary elements of images while blurring, smearing, or obscuring its moving elements. This is very useful when shooting beach scenes, waterfalls or even night photography. In this tutorial I will cover everything from the setup needed to take the shot to getting the most out of it with your edit.

Read the FULL TUTORIAL where Jamie (@landcreature_) will walk us through shooting long exposures with AVGCAMPRO. Prior planning, location, and compostion are key factors in creating gorgeous landscape shots.

Title:
The Pond

Description:
I shot this scene with the 645PRO app, set to F4 b/w film, which gives a low contrast photo full of subtlety. I made a copy of the photo and edited it in Snapseed to achieve a slightly gold/bronze feel to it. Finally, I blended the resulting photo with the original to temper the effect of the edit

Title:
Like a Summer Day
Description:
There was a lot of wind when I shot this photo. Therefore, for the first time I used my old steady Manfrotto tripod with the iPhone instead of the usual Gorillapod tripod. Although this photo is shot with the Pro HDR app, I ended up using only the dark frame because there was too much difference between the leaves in both shots. Post-processing starts in Snapseed: desaturated, changed white balance a bit, added a very low amount of vintage filter, and finished it with some center focus. I also put a copy of the shot through the CrossProcess app and then combined both with the Blender app

Title: Cottage in the Country

Description:
From the Dutch Golden Age, to the Romantic Period, Hudson River School to Luminism. Jan van Goyen, John Constable, JMW Turner, Frederic Edwin Church, there is just so much emotion and drama in the light, tones, and composition captured in Landscape painting and a wealth of inspiration for me as a painter, and as a landscape photographer.  It is this aesthetic that I try to revive in my own work.

Process:
Same technique as before, this time I shot 3 exposures, one for the sky and background, one for the ground, and one for the cottage.  This allows me to paint in light with my finger where I see fit, making the same kind of decisions as with painting.  I really get a lot of satisfaction out of this process, and it truly feels more like art than photography.
